The Problem with Underinflated Tires

Inflated tire compared to under inflated tire

Under inflation can lead to tire failure. It results in unnecessary tire stress, irregular wear, loss of control and accidents. A tire can lose up to half of its inflation pressure and not appear to be flat!

You can’t tell if your tires have enough inflation pressure just by looking at them. Even though they look fine, they may be under inflated by as much as 50%.

According to a recent study, 90% of all blowouts are due to under inflated tires. In a survey by the NHTSA 23% of all vehicles had at least one tire under inflated by 20% or more. This represents a real safety issue.

“You can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3% by keeping your tires properly inflated. Under inflated tires can lower gas mileage by 0.3% for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires. Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer.”

Nitrogen Inflation

When the indicator illuminates, at least one of your tires is more than 25% under inflated. Inspect the tires and check the tire pressure as soon as possible.

Nitrogen VS. Air for Tire Inflation Maintenance

Nitrogen molecules in tire

Air is a mixture of 79% nitrogen. 20% oxygen, 1% vapor and other gases. Replacing the air in tires with pure dry Nitrogen has four primary benefits to the average motorist.

Maintains tire pressure 4x longer than just using regular air

Reduces oxidation which helps to increase tire life by up to 25%

Prevents moisture from the air corroding the valve stems, rims and other metal parts of the tire.

Maintains more consistent tire pressure with varying temperatures reducing false TPMS warming.

When nitrogen is used as the inflation media, the change in rubber properties is significantly slowed down or even halted.

TIRES LAST LONGER WHEN INFLATED WITH NITROGEN DUE TO DECREASED OXIDATION

As a tire ages it undergoes profound chemical changes that decrease its durability. These chemical changes are commonly referred to as oxidation, which simply means that as the tire components are exposed to oxygen, the oxygen particles cause the flexible components of a tire to harden and become brittle. Over time, the tire will simply fall apart under normal stress, just like and old rubber band.

Hot running tire

The Problem with Water in Air  Inflated Tires:

Tires inflated with wet air tend to run hotter and fluctuate more in pressure. Water vapor also acts like a catalyst accelerating corrosion and rust.
